Business card size

The size of a business card depends on the country, in a few millimetres. Here they all are, in mm, cm, inches and pixels, with what a printer needs and how big to make a QR code.

The short answer. In the United States and Canada a business card is 3.5 × 2 inches (88.9 × 50.8 mm). In most of Europe it's 85 × 55 mm (8.5 × 5.5 cm). At 300 dpi that's 1050 × 600 and 1004 × 650 pixels.

Business card size in pixels

Print needs 300 dpi, so these are the sizes to set up your file at, without and with the bleed.

For a card shown on screen only, like in an email signature, half these sizes is plenty.

Bleed and safe area

  • Bleed: most printers ask for 3 mm extra on every side (⅛ inch in North America), so colour reaches the edge after cutting.
  • Safe area: keep text and logos at least 3 to 5 mm inside the edge, because the cut can move a little.
  • Resolution: 300 dpi for photos and logos. Text and vector logos stay sharp at any size.

How big to make a QR code

At least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, with white around it as wide as four of its squares, dark on light. The more details it holds, the denser it gets and the bigger it has to be. Make a QR code with your contact, free: it says how big to print it.

Questions

What is the standard business card size?

There is no single standard. In the United States and Canada it's 3.5 × 2 inches (88.9 × 50.8 mm). In most of Western Europe, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, it's 85 × 55 mm.

What size is a business card in pixels?

At 300 dpi, the resolution printers ask for, a 3.5 × 2 inch card is 1050 × 600 pixels and an 85 × 55 mm card is 1004 × 650 pixels. With bleed added they're 1125 × 675 and 1075 × 720.

What size is a business card in cm?

8.5 × 5.5 cm in most of Europe, 8.89 × 5.08 cm in the United States and Canada, 9 × 5.5 cm in Scandinavia and Australia, and 9 × 5 cm in much of Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Is a business card the same size as a credit card?

Almost. A credit card is 85.60 × 53.98 mm (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1), and a European business card is 85 × 55 mm, so both fit the same wallet slot.

What size should a QR code on a business card be?

At least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, with white around it as wide as four of its squares. A code with many details in it needs to be bigger.
